All......

I seldom go more than a day, or two, without sitting down at the vise to tie. I finally felt well enough yesterday to try it. For the last two weeks I’ve been hit with a bout of vertigo. I’ve never had that before, and frankly, I hope to hell I never have it again. Dizzy as hell.......stumbling around like you’re drunk......hanging on to the wall to get around the house. Not much fun...at all. I’m finally at the point where I get a bit dizzy going from standing to lying down, or vice versa. Other than that, I’m fine. I had heard that vertigo really sucked, but had never personally experienced it. Trust me.....it does.

As I was getting a bit short of Sunken Trico Spinners I figured I’d tie up another couple of dozen. A 2 mm ( or 1.5 if you can get them) Bead, on a #22 curved scud hook (TMC 2488) coco de Leon tails ( tied very long) white thread body, black superfine dubbing, and white z-Lon wings. Just a killer fly for Trico spinner falls. Tie it on about 18” of 6.5 X tippet behind a dry #22 Trico dry spinner. I think I’ll tie up a few at Saturday’s Tie & Lie along with a #24 Sulphur Spinner. Got to have those for the Paradise Valley Spring Creeks in July.

Vertigo is rough. I watched my father go through a few bouts of it a few years back. For one of those bouts, the two of us and a friend had snowmobiled about 20 miles into our camp for a long weekend. On the first morning in camp, my father couldn’t get out of bed. He thought he had the flu. On day three he rebounded as the other fellow in camp and I were making a plan to evacuate him from camp as we were afraid he’d had a heart attack. He was feeling good, and was stubborn about staying, so our guest packed up and left solo while we visited a neighbor whom had arrived at another camp that morning. While sitting having coffee, I watched the color drain from his face and could tell he was relapsing. It was a long, slow ride out of camp that day. Eventually, after many trips to the doc, it turned out that he had salt buildup on the inner ear as a result of drinking too much coffee and not enough water. I’ve also watched others close to me have lesser affects due to inner ear infections. Really debilitating while it lasts.

I’ve had a bout of vertigo that turned out to be BPPV. I didn’t believe it at first, but was prescribed and underwent physical therapy. It cleared it right up. Has something to do with crystals in your inner ear being in the wrong place. There are exercises you can do yourself that will work. I tried them before I went to PT but didn’t really understand the correct procedure until I had someone do it to me. Simple and effective way to eliminate a scary symptom. Just google “BPPV exercises” or “Epley Manoever”.

Dave, I'm sorry to hear that - I hope you get over it quick and stay done with it! Until I had a few episodes of my own, I thought vertigo was just minor dizzy spells - I never imagined how debilitating it was - good luck & I'm filing away Tinsnip's remedy!
