Fished a bay Sunday AM from my canoe.. in search of stripes. We found a couple schoolies, but we also found a s&>/ load of pogies. Probably a dozen or more schools busting the surface, being pushed around by several seals and presumably stripers. We fished heavy sinking lines with large pogie inspired flies. They did not produce any action. I was hopeful we would be able to fool some larger bass... but not so much. It's nice to see such good numbers of pogies back after so many years of next to nothing. And it was quite fun watching the seals work them, diving under the schools and come flying completely out of the water with a cloud of pogies scattering in every direction.

I cant wait for the water to cool off a little and the action pick back up.

Hey peter. Where were you? No shortage of them around our camp in Harpswell, but even fishing them as bait hasn’t turned up much. Good you got some schoolies. That is about what I have seen.

How'd you know! I have done really well from the canoe on the Brunswick side this year, but mostly back in June. Have you been fishing from shore or boat? I have had the best luck up on the mud flats in less then 4 feet of water. Only a few straggler schoolies in the deeper water, although we spent too long Sunday trying to find fish on the pogies and the flats were dry by the time we got over there.

Nice! We have found some producing spots in the incoming and outgoing. But so far this summer, the novelty of a boat has kept the kids interested, but also limits my ability to fish much.... but hard to complain about that. I agree... flats on the incoming have been our secret to success. 3’ is as shallow as I go in the boat.

That's that one good thing about my square stern Old Town, I'll go down to 10 inches with no worries. I only need 6 to run the motor, it can get a little dicey on the flats, cant even see bottom in 6 inches of water.

TGIF's low tide comment made me think of this. A couple years ago while working nights I'd kayak the mouth of the Housatonic River every morning. One morning while I was taking out, a crew that was working on a project to eradicate invasive "phragmites" from some of the islands at the rivers mouth, was just putting in. They were trying various methods to see what would work the best. The boat launch we were using was installed using outdoorsmen funds from the sales of hunting and fishing gear. The slough it was located in was very tidal influenced. I mentioned this to the crew as they headed out. Saying that they should be mindful of the tides as they had a very large jon/work boat loaded with a spray rig including tank and other gear. The next morning as I was leaving they showed up again. I asked how it was going and the replied that I was correct in the tide reference. They didn't pay attention and had to slog through knee to crotch deep mud dragging there gear loaded boat to the ramp for about 200yds. The next day their boat was moored at a worksite up river for the night.
