New to the salt, and preparing to load new backing and 9W line to a large arbor reel. The "capacity" of the reel for this line weight is 200 yards of 30W Dacron backing. My question is what others have found to be optimal...or do you typically just add the recommended capacity amount.

Thanks for you input

I always put on as much as I can without crowding the line against the arbor. More backing = a larger arbor to turn your line around (faster pick up, less line memory).
But also keep in mind that when you rewind line when fishing it won't be as tight as when first wound off a machine- so you'll get some swell. Backing seems to swell a bit after getting wet too.

Stripers don't run too far. I let a 40+"r run off the beach once, just to see, and I don't think she took more than 100' of backing with a very light drag. Of course, that doesn't mean one won't!
