Had the pleasure of fishing w/ Captain Eric Wallace of Coastal Fly Angler in the Florida Keys last week. After launching mid-morning, due to cold overnight temps, we were in trophy tarpon water "out front" in less than 15 minutes. Water temps were down due to a recent front, and made fishing tough, but we spotted a few tarpon. After that, we headed "out back" to the gulf side, and I soon found myself missing a very nice bonefish that ate my fly when I wasn't quite tight -- my bad!!! Very exciting though to say the least. This was my first time flats fishing in the tropics, and the scenery, wildlife and beauty down there is just amazing. Over the next several hours I cast to cuda, jacks, tarpon, and we even ran off a permit. A very visual and high sensory experience. Eric worked hard for me in a steady wind, and the fishing was not easy -- you had to be alert, aware and prepared.

Spent two more days after that continuing to chase mostly tarpon shots, and ended up having a good 1/2 dozen solid chances, some fish even started to look interested, but alas, nothing would eat (other than a puffer fish and baby yellow tail snapper). Saw more permit as well. Enough of an experience to make me want to go back and hook one of those monster tarpon that I saw just 20 feet off the bow of the boat.

Hey Dan;

Cool that you got down there. Looks like the wind was up a bit. But any time on Eric's boat
is time well spent. :)

Tom, wind was up a bit, but not unmanageable. Blowing about 15 knots....biggest problem was water temps -- and also afternoon clouds each day that cut down the otherwise incredible visibiity.

Eric worked his butt off for me -- I really appreciated it!

Oh yeah, and Eric's new boat is sweet. He's got what they call a "jack-plate" on it - which I'd never heard of. It's jacks the motor up vertical (rather than just the trim/tilt) and that thing can move in 6 inches of water...incredible!
