Anyone remember this fly and how it came about?

I think that’s called the whiskey fly after Jim Carter. It was a conclave at the Big Eddy. Mike has some Bushmills out and Jim rolls in with his truck, takes out a bike, maybe sideswipes a car but hops out with low and behold a second bottle of Bushmills. The two then proceed to toast to big fish, big tits and flies. Mike and Jim are so drunk that they pull out the vise, cut some hair off their heads and create the whiskey fly.

At least that’s how I remember it.

Now my memory isn't what it used to be but I'm pretty sure I remember this correctly :?

Hunter was closest - it was a contest fly. The contest was to tie up a fly and submit it as an entry to become the official "Fly Fishing In Maine - Signature Fly" and Bob Erickson tied it.

As I remember I asked him for the recipe and he sent me a finished fly. I can't find the recipe but I've kept that fly tucked in the corner of my fly box and fish it occasionally in pocket water. I won't tie in onto anything less than a 3-X tippet and I cast it into a pocket then skate it to the next pocket. It skates well and catches fish.

That contest ring a bell with anyone?

Bob - you out there somewhere?

Ken B - I don't remember tying that fly with Jim but ... you did say it was during the 2nd Bushmill bottle - could be.

Yup- that’s pretty much how I remember it. Bob tied the winning fly.

And a remember the aftermath of that second bottle, including keeping one inebriated chap from falling face first into the remains of the fire that night. Good times.

I don't remember anything about Bushmills, but I do recall inviting Jim to my campsite to share a dram of Redbreast--a gift from Kathy Scott. After sharing said dram, my fishing partner and I headed off for some rising trout, and returned to a picnic table with an empty bottle 3 or 4 hours later. There was a run-over bicycle and a side-swiped car, and someone pointed me out and said--"That's the guy who started this."

I do not remember the fly.

Well, maybe Ken B. shared that bottle with him and it's his memory that's fuzzy. Because I sure don't remember sharing 2-bottles of Bushmill with anyone. My limit is one.

Thanks Mike! Yep, tied for an FFIM contest, way back! It’s a good one! My tying has taken a turn towards Bristol Bay, alaskasignatureflies!
