Both of these Invicta wets are tied on size 12 hooks. The hook on the left is an Orvis 1641, 2 extra heavy,1 x-short, and the one on the right is a Mustad S82-3906B, 3 x-heavy, 2 x-long.

The on the short-shanked hook could pass for a size 14 and the one on the long-shanked hook could pass for a size 10.

Nice. But we need to see one on a sz 12 x-heavy, regular shank hook for comparison.

Well, it appears I'm going to have downtime enough to tie some standards.

Mike......

This didn’t use to be a problem when there was two major hook suppliers......Mustad and Tiemco.

Now that there are dozens of different hook suppliers, all using differing measurements of what a “ size 12” hook should be; it almost behooves us to stick with one manufacturer that we know, and trust.

Foe example......I really like the new Firehole hooks. Strong....sharp......great right? Well......ummm,.....not really. I ordered some #14 hooks from them........and the damn gap was equal to a #10. WTH? If I wanted 10’s I’d have ordered 10’s.......not 14’s. It seems all the Firehole gaps are way oversized.

The same thing is now occurring with some flylines. Some line manufacturers are saying a #5 line is one size up. That’s NOT a five......it’s a six. If you need a line one full size up to load your rod, it’s not a damned five......it’s a six.

Many hook manufacturers use the Tiemco numbering system. I like it......I know it.....I know exactly what I’m getting. With other new hook suppliers I have no damn idea what I’m ordering. Shesshhhh......

I looked at the Tiemco numbering system and I don't get it. The TMC100 is a standard dry fly, down eye, x-fine wire, wide gap. A TMC105 is a reversed bend, straight eye, 2X-strong, 5X-short. I can't figure out the difference just by looking at the numbers.

I've always stuck with Mustad. I had all the old numbers memorized and wasn't happy when they changed to the new system but they cured that by combining the old and new numbers.

R50-94840 is their standard. The new system information is separated from the old number by the hyphen.

The R30-94833 starts with an R meaning it is a regular bend, the 3 means the wire is 2 less than standard (2 X-fine) and the 0 means the length is standard.

An S60-3399A reads out like this the S is a Sproat bend, the 6 means it's one X-heavy and the 0 means it is a standard length. Easy-peasy if you start with R50 as a starting point.

Is their a code for Tiemco numbering that gives you actual hook information?
