So I stopped by Hannifraud yesterday...packed as expected. The people with TWO carts was more than I have ever seen...all checkouts were manned and womaned..the fruits and veggies (which I was there to avail myself of) were well supplied, and in perfect condition for a salad with dinner (and grapes for this morning). The bread was fresh, and smelled wonderful- and there was a LOT of offerings. The Portland Pie people presented a plethora of penultimate potentials..w/ pepperoni. The red hot dogs were in good measure for the salt depraved. Ham was on sale, and they had full freezers.

The can goods isle was being restocked, and the only shortage was... .... baked beans. For Christs sake, if the world is gonna end, I want something better than B/M baked beans to go out on.

My personal favorite isle, the cookie and chip isle was stuffed with options. Meat was abundant in every style and configuration... turkey price is a little high right now. Buy 2 get one free on D.C., and it seemed like the bottled water group was well represented (bought some for camp). Booze- which I expected to be thin- was full. Grabbed a back-up Pinnacle.

Cheese was in good supply. Beer was well cooled and available in all varieties.

So...the important for life- can't figure a way to do without stuff was there easily...but butt swab was totally gone. In dire circumstances, it has been know to use modified other products for that simple task---and I would hope one had more than a 2 day supply. BUt living without FOOD would be less than optimum. Frozen foods was thin, and bread was out.

It must make me think H.L. Mencken would be enjoying this event. We are destroying society in panic, but will go down with full stomachs but questionable hygiene.

I expect the lunatic fringe is saying "I told you so." and feeling fulfilled with prescient knowledge. I expect gun sales are doing nicely. I bet there is more concealed carry going on today. I actually had a )English) teacher ask me if I thought she should get her money out of the bank. I told her only if they give it in gold. She thought I was serious. I bet she is in a cellar right now.

Gas has dropped to $1.99 at the Rt 46 turn onto Route 9. Must have a shortage...

There may well be cause for serious concern- and I think there is. But prepare as best we can and keep a level head. And if it all goes to ****...collges have a LOT to unused TP....just saying.

Hutch

Well Hutch, Emily just called after visiting local our Hannaford. Everything was wiped out no vegetables, no meat, no nothing. Even the tomato sauce etc was gone. But she had a theory on the fact that the as per about everywhere the TP was also depleted.

What kills me are the (insert everyday avg. worker) turned medical experts. The ones ranting "this is nothing more than the flu!" to "It's the end of the world as we know it!". Unwilling to listen to the other side, willing to go down with the ship for their side. From I'm going to shake everyone's hand and give them a hug, to I need to get to Wal Mart and buy ALL the TP and chicken I can get. The lunacy abounds on both sides and many have their heels dug in knee deep. What really concerns me are the small businesses that won't survive this - I REALLY don't want to end up in a world of nothing but Wal Mart, Olive Garden, and Bud Light. Got my haircut yesterday. The woman cutting my hair has 3 kids, husband works 2 jobs, she thinks she won't be working after this week and doesn't know what they're going to do. Needless to say, she got a pretty good tip. Our favorite local restaurant closed yesterday. This is going to be rough on these businesses and those that make those places tick. Go about your business, be vigilant about hygiene, go out to dinner (while you can) and give that waitress a big fat tip. And, if you find yourself going to either end of the spectrum I mentioned above remember this....

We’ve been wondering how some small businesses and eateries will manage an extended shutdown too. We decided to buy gift certificates for the ones we visit most often. If they are offering curbside pickup, we’ll probably try that too.

I try an remember that facebook and the comments seen there are a separate reality. Everyone I usually interact with are much happier, friendlier, less angry, and more respectful than the impression left by commenters. And we’re a resourceful species. Generally, we’ll be fine and new ideas will emerge from this.

Still, be careful and hunker down. It’s not so bad.

The tide of irrational behavior is what concerns me. I saw another ridiculous call to arms to protect us from the virus ridden, socialist hordes. I have 11 rolls of toilet paper and a brick of .22 ammo- squirrels are plentiful behind my house and I can dig clams and eat Pollock.

While the pandemic is not stupid, the lack of reaction to it, followed by the insane over-reaction is. Someone is going to get shot over toilet paper....

If there is a quarantine, can we still go fishing?

Hunter has hit the nail...the moderate income people will be crushed by the closings. Going to be difficult for many good people in the next few months.

Lowes was stocked to the roof w/ TP today, and Damons had all the Bud Lite Augusta may ever need(want)...but there are many reports of friends that there ARE sold out items each day at Hanniford. Which I guess we need to expect. Have a friend who owns a gun shop in Augusta, and his place is standing room only ...which is worrisome.

WIll the cure exceed the illness?- i don't know which will win the race for worst outcome...

Hutch

Same as most... with kiddos we shop in bulk anyway, so all paper stocks are up to par. Food will be fine, went to market basket on Friday to cook up a pot of gumbo, and was postively overwhelmed by the fresh produce, dairy and meet. No shortage of chicken, andouille, and okra.... nearly had to part with my first born for two cans of red beans, diced my own vine ripe tomatoes. I do wonder who is eating all this stuff. Blood pressures are going to be through the roof.

I am working from home, which isn’t all bad... unfortunately the dock can’t go in until May, so no social distancing on the island yet.... but after another spring weekend I might just swim out there.

Keeping the kids busy and distanced is a full time job...

I certainly hope everyone does there part so this can burn out quickly enough.

SF's lockdown order included provision for continuing outdoor activities and I think you could wedge fishing in, so there's not too much worry about, right?

I took my kids fishing yesterday while we're nominally more or less quarantined in place. We saw 0 fish, but we drowned some worms, got our toes in the sand and enjoyed the sunshine. And the (now very) old dog didn't even roll in any mummified carp washed up on the shore. There were quite a few others out, but it wasn't exactly shoulder to shoulder and I did not see any hookups in the hour or two we tried.

My family is fortunate in that both my wife and I can more or less work from home. So I was thinking about relocating the fam for a month or more to take advantage of pre-runoff fishing season. With schools closed for the foreseeable future, it could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to take the family and do that. April is prime time. I can't quite see how we'll work full time, so if I'm hanging out with the kids, we might as well go fishing, right?

The key piece going forward is developing efficient and fast ways to identify who is sick and separating them. You only need a lockdown when you can't tell who has the virus. The sooner we get to that point, the sooner we'll be able to mostly get back to something close to normal life. I don't know if that means people checking for fevers at the entrance to schools, etc., but there's got to be a solution out there. Once we can do that, then we can get back to mostly normal.

TGIF- where is the dock ordinance? I've been wondering what the driver is on seasonal dock dates. State or local?

Clearly all of you--even Ken B, who is on day 77 or so of optimism--have become glass half-empty types.

Today's good news? Cushnoc is delivering to 04351--and both the pizza and beer are excellent! You Augusta area folks may want to check if your zip code is included. I recommend the Lawyer Up porter, but the Kresge goes down nicely, too.
