All.......

Yesterday I was tying up new leaders for all my trout reels, as I do every year. I’m well aware that it would be much easier to just leave on the factory installed loop that comes with virtually all new flylines..........but the first thing I do after installing the new line onto my reels is to cut off that $#*$&”# loop. I hate loop/ loop systems, as I don’t like 5he hinge they make when casting.

Yes......I also know that many, if not most, of you love them, as do most of my friends. That’s the beauty of this sport......we all have our likes and dislikes, and none of us are wrong.

I had a devil of a time getting the .021 material shaved down to fit in the tiny hole in the Shimakazi tool I use, and after four tries, and ####ing it up all four times I just left my tying bench, gave it up as a bad job, and tried the next day. It went perfectly, btw. Funny how that happens. It would be much easier to just buy a commercial leader, thread the narrow end through the tiny hole, and just cut off the rest of the leader after getting it blind spliced, but I want the .021 to be 36” for the butt of the leader.

IMO, the most elegant knot in flyfishing is the blood ( aka barrel) knot. A five turn ( each side) well lubricated, and well seated blood knot is just a thing of beauty. You can, if you’re not certain of your knot tying skills, hit each knot of a knotted leader with a hit of Superglue, but that’s overkill, IMO. Your tippet knot might let go, but well tied blood knots higher up the leader never will.

Keep the faith. We usually get plastered with our annual St. Paddy’s day blizzard.......and still might......but Spring is just around the corner, and Mayflies might start popping off in about six weeks, or so.

Spring is in the air. The first timberdoodles of the year were in the yard yesterday morning. And the flower beds are starting to push up through the soil.

Long ago, I did something similar but that was when lines came straight at the end without a built-in loop. I used to attach a 6-8” piece of mono to the end of the fly line with a nail knot. I then proceeded to put a loop in the other end of the short piece of mono. I used that loop to attach my commercial tapered leaders loop-to-loop. So yes, I’m too lazy to tie my own leaders and still use loop-to-loop.

But I have a question. What do you do when you want/need to change your leader when using your hand tied versions? Do you untie everything except the section nearest the fly line and then blood knot to that? Or do you go lower (more towards the fly)?

I guess all this is predicated on the idea that you’re also using a nail knot to connect line to leader. Or, are you using blood knots there too?

Just curious (and a little impressed with your patience).

Tim

Thanks for that Dave. Looking up the splice business after this. You make it sound easy. I'm not convinced that it really is or maybe it's just more complicated at first. I have a new rod coming so maybe I'll give it a try on the new line. Going back to a double taper setup, maybe this "old school" approach would fit right in.
