Anyone else afflicted with this pre-season habit? I just emptied mine out and was shocked at what I'd squirreled away in there and forgotten. Not the least of which is a Ross Gunnison 2 reel with an extra spool wound with a sink tip line. I thought I'd lost that!

Thinking of trying a chest pack arrangement instead of a vest. We'll see. But one thing's for sure (before you ask) NO, I'm not going to wash the vest.

If you decide to try a chest pack one of the things I found lacking was some way to manage my net.
You can stick it in your wading belt but I have seen quite a few people lose nets that way. Also in the rain it’s a pain and I don’t like the net hanging from my neck strap or the D ring on my rain jacket.
There are two new products from Fishpond that you might want to look at. I have the SWITCHBACK WADING BELT SYSTEM and really like it, the other is the THUNDERHEAD CHEST PACK. Both have a net holder built in that doesn’t hang off the neck strap. I have an older fishpond chest pack and purchased the replacement suspension system designed for the thunderhead, it fits perfectly and for early season when I don’t need a bunch of flies it’s just right.
The belt system can be upgraded with all kinds of stuff but I just added a second 5L pack fished 2 weeks out west and had plenty of room for everything I needed.

Thanks for that, Parker. I’ll look into it and compare it to the Umpqua system I’ve been looking at. It has a built in net sleeve on the back portion as well as loops for more traditional hooking. You can see it here, it shows up below the main shot in a thumbnail: https://www.avidmax.com/umpqua-overlook ... gI1JvD_BwE

Since I’ve also been thinking of a longer-handled net, it might be just the thing. I’ve always hated the net swinging around on me when I least expect it. I’d like to think that sleeve arrangement would keep it handy but stable.

Just wondering why so many have gone to such a much larger net these days? Are the fish getting that much bigger?

I know a net behind my head would get hooked on a very regular basis.... but those long nets are great for a boat, not sure I would want to lug one all day or have it bumping on stuff while trudging through the woods.

Long nets are much easier to use to net someone else’s fish.
I saw a dad blow a netting of a 22 inch cutthroat his boy had hooked, using a short net where a longer one would have made it easy.
Some older folks seem to use them as a walking stick.
A Stevens net of 28” is about all the net I want to deal with if fishing, guiding I would want a nice long handle.

I got thinking about the net conundrom. I do carry a Stevens net on a magnet release as high on my back as I can. It got me thinking and my mind wandered to a cattle prod. The one we use(and abused) as kids would be easy to carry I thought. Similar to a folded wading staff. So I tried to find some info on electro-shocking. Mainly voltage and trying to figure if a cattle prod would work. I didn't find what I was looking for, but did find this amusing paragraph under electro fishing.

"A method of electrofishing using illegally diverted electricity from overhead electric lines is prevalent in parts of the Indian State of Kerala. This can result in accidental deaths due to electrocution."

And we allow these people to help us trouble shoot our electronics.

As a side note, some 30+ years ago as an apprentice lineman working in the NEK of Vermont I longingly looked into some of the roadside brooks under the primary power lines, just wondering what a little 4KV tickle would do.

Ah the modern world. Where my dad and uncles used to lovingly toss a quarter stick of dynamite into a pool, clever humans are now diverting electricity to effect the same result. Progress!
