Post subject:  Pre-rigged nymph boxes - do you use them?

I resisted using pre-rigged nymph boxes. Mainly because when I first loaded the inserts I tried to cram too many rigs on and ended up with a tangled mess.

Later, I tried putting just two pre-rigged sets of three wets, nymphs or combinations thereof. That was pretty manageable and with five inserts, 2 sets of pre-rigged flies (3 to a set) that gives me 30 flies all tied and ready to go.

It seems to save me time and tippet on the water. Is anybody else using these or has anyone tried them and just given up on them?

Never tried them......never had the urge to try them. I can tie on a Nymph dropper rig just about as fast as I can tie on a dry fly, so I never saw a need for them. I guess they’d work, and if someone likes them I’d say Go for it, but I’m not interested, fwiw. as always......ymmv.

For those of us mere mortals... I find pre-rigging to be very helpful for switching double nymph rigs. This box is pretty bulky, but it seems like it would prevent snags. I would use it.

I have a friend whom builds trolling rigs for panfish, etc.. who uses these and loves them. They work well for keeping gear untangled. I suspect they'd be a good option for storing live bait trolling rigs as well. I've never really thought about pre-rigging nymphs or wet flies as I change flies a lot and this would just be a PITA, IMO.

I have a handful of my favorite two-fly rigs (hopper-dropper, dun & emerger, etc) rigged up one one of these. Comes in handy at times.

Yep, friend Greg Bostater turned me onto them. They are PERFECT for pre-rigging bead set ups for Bristol Bay. Simply switch out at a barrel swivel. Saves a raft load of time!!!

I think they're very handy but I've never used a commercial one - I've always just fashioned my own out of small blocks of closed cell foam - for me it's a lot easier & faster to tie on a whole new rig than try to build a new one, especially when: my fingers are frozen, the wind is howling, it's dark out, I'm standing in the middle of a raging river or I have buck fever - I'm not too crazy about how bulky or complicated the commercial models are...

That exact box has been sitting in my basement for years, and you've finally convinced me so tie up some rigs and load it up. I generally use just 2 flies per rig, because any more increase the odds of snaggled messes dramatically, although I do occasionally tie them. How often do you use 3 on a rig? Or are you using 3 sets of 2? Does anyone use 3 fly rigs anymore?

Thanks Mike. I didn't know these boxes existed. I've been putting my rigs in those little plastic boxes Beans hands out at their store when you buy flies. I have one of the dropper rig fly boxes back ordered from Orvis. It should be here well before the Lower Enchanted road opens up.

I dont use pre rigged tandem nymph setups like you show but I do tie together my own systems. I think this might be something that I am going to have to try as I have been fishing more and more nymph rigs over the last couple of years.

I find the commercially available versions too bulky, so I rigged up a homemade system using a small (2" x 3") Bean fly box (the kind you get if you buy flies there) and some custom-cut pieces of closed-cell foam that fit snugly in the box. I can fit about five rigs in one box, which fits in a small vest pocket.

Very handy for rapid changes on stream, for the rigs I use regularly.
