You can substitute the word fishing for hunting. Impact is the same nationwide

In Maine, this is true for hunting, but not so much for fishing.

The USFWS keeps annual statistics on license sales--you can find them online for at least the past 50 years. These are all numbers of PAID license holders, so do not include those who get free licenses.

Hunting Licenses

2019: 162,000
2009: 196,000
1999: 207,000
1989: 220,000
1979: 234,000

Fishing Licenses
2019: 276,000
2009: 273,000
1999: 273,000
1989: 259,000
1979: 251,000
1979: 234,000
