This might be a mistake. Still, the sun was warm today (albeit while it was reflecting off the snow) and that's cause for celebration. So I have been. Celebrating.
So here's what I want to say—It's a great thing, this fly fishing stuff. One of the great joys of my life. I've encountered some exceptional people in the process and one in particular is on my mind tonight. I have run into him at least a half dozen times at a place on the big K below a dam. It's a short section of river that's wade-able before the boat landing and the bridge.
This young man is local. Grew up there. Fishes with his black Lab close at hand. The first time we met, I was staying back and watching him catch fish. I was a tad jealous, but still smiling because he was in the right spot with the right stuff and I enjoyed seeing him do it. At a certain point, when it was nearly too dark to see, he turned to me and waved me over. "Plenty of room" he said. I went over, and I started catching too. Since then I've seen him there in all seasons. The last time was during Bow season and he was parking to get set up in his stand.
I guess my point is that this young man was a natural. He made no claims, he had no agenda. He grew up there and fishing it was a natural thing to do. I look forward to seeing him again. I am completely guilty of feeding my habit with increasingly expensive gear and more and more elaborate techniques and materials. That stuff is fun and perfectly OK in my book. But there's something pure about just fishing and who gives a sh#t what rod you're using. That's what that kid does for me.
Glass is empty. Thanks for your attention.
