I follow Dave M's practice of full winter maintenance of my gear. Right down to the leader pieces and hidden recesses of my vest. I reorganize my fly boxes and cull old patterns, fill the voids - it takes hours.

Right now I'm looking at changing from one style of fly box to another. Daunting task. There are over 200 flies in each of the two or three boxes I'm thinking of switching.

That's a lot of cash per box if I went out and purchased those flies instead of tying them but - with five boxes - all with those kinds of numbers I still think it's cheaper to buy your flies

I have to laugh and agree as I look at how much I have invested in fly tying. But it's a great hobby and it allows me to give flies away to other fisherman and organizations.

Well.......if we were all buying our flies at full retail I’m willing to bet that we wouldn’t be carrying all the flyboxes stuffed with hundreds of flies in our vest/packs that we do. If I had to buy my flies I might buy six, instead of tying up two dozen of each pattern.

Besides, as Bill correctly pointed out.........on a day like this if I were buying flies I might just put in an order for them, instead of brewing up a pot of industrial strength coffee and heading down to the tying room before the Pats game tonight. I’ll probably finish all the 26 flies for the Caddis Swap.......then tie up a bunch for the FFIM CFR Day, as my personal flyboxes are already chock a block full.

Confessions of a Fly Buyer. Yup, that's me.

Do I have two dozen of any pattern in 3 different sizes and 4 colors? No.

Do I have 6 fly boxes in my vest at all times? Yes. Did I go out and buy them all in one go? No—I filled those boxes over years of buying flies three, or six at a time.

Do I have a couple boxes worth of flies that I've never used? Yes. But I still carry them all.

Do I ever feel as though I don't have the exact fly I need? Occasionally, but more often I convince myself that the fish are stupid to not go for the fly I want them to go for.

As for tying, I don't feel guilty exactly. But I do think it will become a hobby at some point. I'm edging closer and closer. I honestly don't know if there's a fly tyer in me or not.

tinsnip ..I feel the same way about the fly choice ..on a small wooded trout stream if I can't get a take on a natural baby Kennebago muddler ..or on a "usual " then those "stupid trout" don't want anything

and I too like to give away flies to folks ..I'm not the best tier out there so I don't normally sign up for these swaps because I'm just not that great at them .. Dave M has graciously sent me flies in the past that I have had difficulty tying myself (thanks Dave ) and I have dissected them and been pretty decent at replicating it , but I do try and keep it as simple as possible ,nothing complicated

I have mastered the Kennebago muddler though ..for some reason the spinning of the deer hair was never an issue ,so with that said is it wrong to have two streamer boxes filled with various sizes and colors of Kennebago Muddlers  hey ..give the people(fishies ) what they want right
