A weighted maple syrup tied on a 4X #10 with a dozen wraps of wire, a gold or black nickel tungsten bead and a golden pheasant tippet tail. I nymph 90% of the time and this fly is what I use for weight instead of split shot. Because it’s always on my rig it accounts for more than half of the fish I catch. I catch fish every month of the year on it except the two months that I don’t trout fish, July and August.

Y'know Marchetti, I can't believe I haven't tried the Maple Syrup out here. Have you guys heard of the Mop Fly? It's in the same family as the Maple Syrup and a bunch of guides are using them out here. I don't nymph too often and have yet to tie one on.

I have heard of them, but have not tried them. I’m trying to cut back on synthetics. The rayon chenille I use for the maple syrup is about one of the only materials that I haven’t found a good natural substitute for.

Golden Retriever and Maple Syrup did the best for me. Speaking of Mop Flies, a chartreuse one did well early in the season.
