I'm fortunate to have some really great people in my life. One of them recently bid on and won an auction item at a local fundraiser that included Simms gear and VERY generously gifted it to my wife and I. This leaves me looking at Simms jackets on a day similar to when I tend to fish of late (cool and soggy). I really have no idea where to start when it comes to Simms jackets. Having spent a very wet week in Alaska a few years ago, and with winter/spring fishing on the brain - I'm looking for a good jacket for the kind of conditions that make normal people stay indoors.

So, what would you pick for a jacket if picking one from the Simms catalog?

I have a 7-8 year old G4 Guide jacket, goretex of course, that I love. A layer of wool under it, and I'm warm in April and October. I have treated the goretex (Nikwax only) once and it still keeps me dry. Lots of pit zips to keep cool in the summer.

Only downside is that with all the big pockets, gizmos and gadgets, it doesn't pack well, and really designed to transition my vest to the pockets, which i hate doing... I may go for something with less gadgetry since 99% of the time, I keep my vest on top of it... but go toward their higher end, and goretex for the lasting power.

And if you buy one that you don't like, just send it to me, and I'll send it back for you...

ThatG-4 is a superb jacket. I have 5he regular Guide for a bit less $$, and a PAC Lite for summer conditions. Can’t go far wrong with either the G-4 or the Guide. Mine is over 10 years old.......and still keeps me warm and dry in a deluge.

My LL Bean jacket (11 yrs) gave up the ghost in a deluge on my May trip to the Big Horn this spring. When we got off the river I went straight to the fly shop and bought a G4. It has not rained since. No, seriously. VERY effective. I will say it doesn't pack as well as the old jacket. Really stiff. But with all things Simms, I will not part with it. 8)

Madison River Fishing Company has all sizes of Simms Guide jackets on sale for $245 .....about $100 off the retail price......if anyone is interested.

As always, this is for your info only.......as I have no financial interest in either Simms or MRFC.
