A praying mantis on my screen in Waterville tonight. I've lived in Maine all my life and I believe this sighting is a first. Aren't they an insect found mostly in the south?

Hatch,

If by south you perhaps mean Massachusetts, then yes. We would find them quite often growing up in the fields around our house in western Mass. Not sure I've seen one in years though in NH.

They’re fairly common in Maine. I used to see them all the time when haying my grandfather’s fields.

Sorry didn't expect the picture to be that big and don't know how to resize it.

I have a neighbor that's a medical marijuana grower and he buys and releases them to control harmful insect infestations.

When I was a kid we would have contests on who could catch the most of these. It seemed that if one was there there would be a dozen in the area.
