As much as it won’t feel like fall the next couple of days, Fall Fishing is on the way.

I went down into the basement tying room this morning to tie up a bunch of attractor flies to float a Nymph underneath. The dry acts more like a strike indicator for the Nymph than a fly that I’d expect the Brookies and Landlocks to actually come up to eat.......but often aggressive fish will actually come up and smack the dry.

As I really dislike Stimmies ( they just helicopter the damn tippet unless you go extreme......like 3X extreme) and I want the fly to float high and dry all day; I use Chubby Cherynobles.......big.....like #8’s. With a foam underbody and foam wing.

This morning I tied up a few in UV dubbed Purple, a few in UV hot yellow........and a few in hot orange. I didn’t have any UV Ice Dub in hot orange, so I had to go with Caddis emerger dubbing on those, but I think the orange will attract Brookies at least.

I actually prefer yellow for Landlocks in the fall.

These will float a #22 PT Nymph to imitate the sub emerger Tiny BWO’s that come off in October.

I’ll be up with a few friends on a good LL stream in mid October, so hopefully those tiny BWO’s will cooperate. Not much trout fishing for me in August as I don’t like stressing the trout/LL’s in the warm water, and these last few years.......frankly....September hasn’t been much better as far as water temps go.......at least where I usually trout fish.

Gear up for October.......

Dave M

Dave,
I'm heading to that same river for the very first time this October as well. I have always done Rangeley in September but after the last few years of warm and dry in September a mutual friend of ours talked me into coming out there.

I love a stimmie... but I'll have to try some of those chubbys as well.

Peter

Definatley on yellow for LLS. I have a particular stonefly that looks more like a mcginty that they just love.
