I went to hit up my local stream after work today and noticed someone, presumably the dam owners, had cut a ton of trees and brush from around the dam and side or the river. Whoever did it decided to dump the majority of said brush into the river, creating quite the hazard, and mess. Does anyone know if this is legal? It most likely is, but just seemed unnecessary and, well, lazy. I might contact the dam owner, not Brookfield, and talk to someone about it, doubt they'll do anything about it but maybe they will think twice about doing it that way again.

Gripe over...
Peter

Saw the same thing at one of Brookfield's dams a year or so ago.

Don't like cutting stream bank trees, but "wood is good" for habitat. Better than the flashboards that used to break off from Shawmut and Edwards and probably other dams and end up in the river. Marine plywood is not a good habitat structure, sinks to the bottom, and is slippery as snot when it does.

Any cutting within 250' of the water is subject to DEP permitting...and such permits are very restrictive on the number of trees cut. I also highly doubt such permits would allow for stream disposal of brush.
Peter - to satisfy your curiosity, I would suggest checking with DEP first to inquire about the cutting which took place.
