....this morning was busy with Hi Vis PMD Klinkhammers......size 18 on a TMC 200r hook.

Often on a very sunny cloudless day on the Spring Creeks the glare coming off the water can be intense, and seeing a regular Parachute or Klink with a white post can be almost impossible, even with good polarized sunglasses.......hence the need for hi viz Klink’s with an orange z-Lon post and Whiting Midge saddle hackle.

I do tweak the hook to make it a bit more Klink like in that I take my pliers and bend the forward quarter of the shank to horizontal so that the rear of the hook hangs farther down in the water.....as a true emerger rather than a dry fly. On my Klinks only the post and Hackle are above the film, everything else sits either down in the film or beneath it. I think this gives the trout a much better profile to think it’s either a true emerger or a still-born.......which is often the key on those Creeks.

Good tying, everyone.

Dave M

As we are approaching the season I've been down in the tying room cleaning. God what a mess. I came home in Oct and dropped everything in there and never went back. I hate tying and only begin again as the season starts or I'm getting ready for a trip. So cleaning, sorting, filling the wood box and then a nap. I'm off to Florida next week so damn won't have a chance to tie (did I mention I hate tying).

This year with the Green River coming up I'll be tying Yellow Sallies in all forms. Bruce and my buddy Chris just killed them on that fly last year. Bunch of Prayers as usual and also some classic Streamers for Memorial Day weekend. Streamers were the champs last spring.

I don't know what time of year you are going to Green River, but if you will be there in late May to mid June I would strongly suggest tying flies for the Cicada hatch. The fish go wild for those bugs. When there I used a large black/white PMX and Mondo Cicada. I can't say enough good things about the Green, but if possible take an extra non-fishing day and go to Dinosaur National Park (if you have an interest in such things). It is only about an hour and a half from Dutch John

Not to completely highjack this thread, but where do folks stay in Dutch John? I’ve only been once and truck camped down at the campground, but know I’d like to go back and am curious where folks would recommend staying. Great fishery.

I guess I’m more like Dave than Al, I love to tie. Being retired, there is hardly a day over the winter that I don’t tie at least one fly for Alaska. Such a variety of techniques come into play. I sell some, give a bunch away and donate the rest. Two years ago, I got a weeks stay at Angler’s Alibi on the Alagnak in exchange for tying many dozens. A great opportunity, but what I really love is the person who says I’m going to be on such and such river, during this time, tie me what I will need. Perfect.

Been there for a major Cicada hatch years ago. Fishing was crazy. This year were going in late July.

edit to add: If it's a good Cicada year you can throw them all summer long and fish will eat them. The Chernobyl Ant invented for the Green is very likely a Cicada pattern.

We've done 5-6 trips to the Green over the last 20 years or so. For all of those we stayed at Flaming Gorge lodge, really the only sensible place to stay for years. You can rent a condo or a motel room there. Now a days Trout Creek, the fly shop in Dutch John, offers several motel type rooms for hire also. But but.....this year we're heading for the campground. Got a good friend who now lives in Ogden Utah. He's got a neighbor with a big RV that my buddy gets to use for free. My friend Bruce Eaton is heading out for two weeks and I'm going for one so will rent a car at SLC and drive out.

Yup, Flaming Gorge Resort. We've done 3 guy's trips there in the last 5 years. We do all of our own cooking so the full size kitchen is nice and the charcoal grills out back are handy. Altho a second floor unit is not quite as convenient when traipsing up and down with a load of food. ;)

Agreed, first floor is the best option. They also have a decent restaurant and flyshop.

Cleaned up my tying room. Course I haven't tied a fly yet this year so it will be neat for a short time.
