My dog is developing a bit of a bird problem.

Okay- so maybe not a problem as much as a habit. And by that, I mean- he spends a fair amount of time running patterning, flushing, and retrieving drills with a semi-local dog trainer and I. As a result- he handles a fair number of chukar partridge over the course of a month. So, I have access to them as a byproduct of his training regimen.

They're similar to a Hungarian partridge, though a bit smaller. Looking at the back feathers, they appear to be quality soft hackle materials. And the feathers on the sides make for interesting streamer cheeks. So, why aren't chukar more readily available at most fly shops as an alternative to Hungarian partridge (or Sharptail grouse, etc... that one can find in western shops)? I can't remember the last time I saw one for sale somewhere, and surprisingly- don't seem to have any in my semi-horded tying supply stockpile.

If I end up with a few decent birds leftover from training, I may try the Craig Mathews / Blue Ribbon Flies method of washing and preserving birds (YouTube it).

Funny...I have 2 chukar skins in my gear right now- and they DO make fine hackle for soft hackles. I prefer them over Huns. The only problem to me is that I seem to run through the "good" feathers quickly.

Fall, the BEST time of year!
