Post subject:  NC Fishing & Other Stuff

A few weeks ago I was down in western North Carolina visiting my daughter, her husband and my brother - naturally I brought my fly rod and managed to squeeze in some fishing - twice with my brother, twice with my son-in-law and once on my own - all but one outing occurred in the Pisgah National Forest in the Pigeon River watershed and the last was in the French Broad watershed - one of the cool things about those streams is that they offer a variety of opportunities to fish for both stocked and wild/native brookies, browns and rainbows - the fishing was a little slower than usual because of lowish, warmish water, but we never got skunked...they combination of altitude (3000 - 4000') and stream cover keeps the streams down there much cooler thru the dog days than up here, so the fishing holds up surprisingly well - small mayfly nymphs and soft hackles produced well during the brightest, warmest part of the day and a parachute Adams worked well the rest of the time - the streams were small to medium sized and every one was an endless sequence of falls, plunge pols and deep runs -the fish were mostly smallish - the best part of the fishing was definitely being able to spend time with my brother & son-in-law on some really gorgeous streams - if any of you ever get close to western NC, I would highly recommend checking out the fishing in and around the Pisgah NF.

Oh yeah, the other stuff...my daughter just gave birth to our first grand child, a boy, Henry Miller. All are doing very well and Henry will grow up in a fantastic neighborhood - their backyard is on the side of a mountain and looks out at a ridge that is several hundred feet higher than Mt. Katahdin and has a trout stream at the bottom of the hill...we're heart-broken that they don't live closer to ME but that could change...I've already got Henry a fly rod and a kayak and we've got his first visit all planned - these are very exciting times...good luck for the duration of the fall season!

Henry sure is a good looking little guy. Congratulations to your family for winning the lottery!

I'm never surprised by the beauty each state or regions holds. All the more reason for you to visit more often and help Master Henry along.

Great report. I've hiked Pisgah but never fished there. The tall mtns of NC and TN are gorgeous. Fabulous pictures and a great looking kid!

Looks like you've got a keeper there. I guess a motorcycle trip to that region is on my bucket list at this point. I spent most of my life not realizing they had higher elevations than the Northeast, and it appears they've done quite a job of making the roads that criss-cross them quite interesting.

Handsome little man!

While he isn't in Maine full time, I am already envious about the adventures he'll have with his grandpa!
