We had 9 men in camp this weekend, and basically hooted it up AT camp because the river was a no-show. While we did catch a very few fish, we had 3 good fishermen who got shut out. There are fish there, and finally, there are some numbers in places...but there are few bugs and not much activity in the fish. Bass and chub are still abundant in the river. No-see-ums were also common. The New Jersey group ( 10 guys) were there, and they were nearly shut out totally.

On any typical trip, on the morning we head home, we catch an "end on fish"...I could not do it. Neither did Bill nor I think- Parker. Still....as I have Friday off, I will be there for the closer with low expectations.

Oops, forgot.

A high point of this weekend, while not the fishing, was the FOOD! Gussa is a food snob and a superior cook. He plans meals weeks ahead of time, and then shops intently for the perfect combinations of pre/post meal delights. Friday was a fine Argentinian wine, with pasta w/ meat sauce and excellent bread. But Saturday----Saturday, he may have made the perfect meal. Certainly the best we have had at camp so far... the "Hor De overs" were large shrimp cooled, 2 types of cheeses, smoked salmon, wheat crackers...then- Prime rib, green salad, baby red potatoes and sour cream. Desert was fudge brownies.

That prime rib was labor intensive (I never knew how much!)- near constant attention, technology for the temp sensor inside the meat, cooling and second cooking--- who knew? Just melt in your mouth good.

He can be hired for meals at YOUR camp...payment to be made in flies and cheap vodka.

Ah- camp. I wish I were heading that way this coming weekend. However- SHE has made plans for us to head to Rhode Island to pick up a new-to-HER vehicle from her folks and introduce my new pup to them. I'm hoping to make it back up that way to bird hunt soon though. Good luck with the fishing.

Hutch,
I hardly fly fish much but check this site almost daily and really love all the camp reports. I haven't been to GLS in probably 5 years, but your reports bring me back. So many memories, trips with people from near and far, different years, different flies....good stuff. Thanks for sharing.
