All....

A few weeks ago I wrote on one of my tr's that my beloved Orvis (Hardy) CFO IV had slop between the frame and spool, causing the line to become trapped, and that lost me a couple of really nice, hot Rainbows on the Missouri. I was bummed......as I love that old (1974......I think) reel.

I sent it out to Bill Archuletta in Oregon.....and he sent it back saying that Orvis had the fix; as, apparently, this has been an on going problem......as it's a design flaw in the reel, and nothing that I did wrong.

I then called Orvis repairs.......explained the problem........and Orvis sent me.......gratis believe it or not.......not one but two new line guards with the bulbous "wings" that solve the problem. They did tell me to be damned careful removing the old screws from the line guard to make really sure that I didn't cross thread the screws......thereby making the new line guard, in essence, useless.

I know a lot of people on these Boards crap on Orvis, and the people that buy Orvis equipment.......but I gotta tell you; Orvis has ALWAYS done right by me. Both when Mike and Linda owned Fly Fishing Only and the Vermont operation. Kudos to Orvis....they do right by their customers.

We all bitch (rightly so) when companies make products that don't live up to our expectations, so we should also be quick to point out companies that do right by us. Thanks Orvis!

+1 on Orvis. Their customer service has always been outstanding. As far as their equipment... YMMV but I wouldn't trade my 711 superfine for any other 8" 4wt graphite rod.
