Went trolling yesterday and kept some nice stocked holdover trout for a wicked good dinner with fresh-picked fiddleheads.
I don't keep many fish, but when I do I always inspect the stomach contents. We found these fat specimens were packed full of large silver shiners with big round eyes. 4-5 inches long with significantly tapered bodies. They looked almost like sardines. Way different than any shiners I have encountered in Maine, though I rarely use shiners and as stated rarely keep trout. Maybe they are fairly common.
Any ideas on species?

It's a wild ass guess without a photo, but might they be landlocked alewives?

And the correct Maine pronunciation is L WIVE. Flatlanders give themselves away by saying Ale Wife.

In some parts of the state the "v" is silent-- "El-wie"
