I spent the last few days up in the Rangeley area. Had a great couple days with my cousin then a few more with a couple good friends. Conditions were not great and fishing was very tough. Nymphing was the key and fishing was better earlier in the week then later. My cousin did pretty well Saturday getting his best salmon ever as well as a few pretty good bkt. I was surprised at the number of brookies in the river as the water temp was around 64°. Last year the water temp was about the same and I didn't land a single bkt in 5 days. I did hook into one solid fish that ripped me downstream and I couldn't keep up with it. The most memorable was the biggest fish of the trip, a 19 or maybe 20 inch female salmon that took a size 22 beadhead PT on a wonderful cane rod a friend let me use for the day. It's just an absolute blast to play a good fish on a cane rod.
Those of you who canceled and went elsewhere probably made the best decisions. I was lucky to land 3 or 4 fish a day, and didn't even hook a fish on Tuesday. This year was much more about hanging out at camp with good company then fishing sun up to sun down. I still had a blast in my favorite part of the state fishing for my favorite fish.

Peter

Good stuff, Peter. Hanging out at camp in Rangeley, working hard for a few tough fish each day, still beats the snot out of working for paycheck. Second-to-last salmon looks like a good one.

Yup, the second to last was the big female pushing 20, fought hard and almost had me into the backing. Last fish of the trip for me.

Way better then work, no doubt. I could do that every day of the year. Hang out and tie flies all morning, eat lunch then hit the river till dark.
